True Parallels
Trust Company's follow-up to 2002's The Lonely Position of Neutral opens with the same familiar power of the first disk's single, "Downfall." "Stronger" has the same solid drumwork [despite a changing of the guard from the last album], some fairly heavy guitar riffs, and a similar message of rebellion and angst. From this point little distinguishes this album from its predecessor. Well, little that's positive. Where Neutral had the strangely infectious "Hover" [which appeared in remixed form on the soundtrack for the film Underworld] as a backup for "Downfall," the second best song on True Parallels is the album’s hidden track. The rest of the album contains songs that sound rote and indistinguishable from one another, though the intro to "Breaking Down" shows some [unrealized] promise. Where the band's consistency leaned more towards the enjoyable side of tolerable, the second release sounds stale. It's hard to tell when a song has run its course and harder to tell why you should care. The enhanced portion of the album features three videos [including a live performance medley] and an acoustic version of the album's opening track. The acoustic presentation fits the material a little more precisely than the album version. It's almost enough to wonder why this version was delivered as enhanced content rather than as the album's hidden track. Of course, even with the enhanced content and the secret track, it's hard to feel like you're getting your money's worth.
