With Thunder, Lightning, Strike, Britain's The Go! Team trapped double dutch schoolgirls, muddy Sonic Youth outtakes, and 70s funk pastiche in a gold-plated cage and set it off with M-80s, announcing their arrival on the independent music scene as the next big thing. A couple licensing agreements and many euphoric live shows later, they have returned with their second foray into ingenuity. Proof of Youth shows the band (with a few solid guest spots including Public Enemy's Chuck D) pumping through more of the same giddy dance collages we all fell in love with the first time around. Sure, there are those who would fault the group for not reinventing the wheel and turning the ship port when starboard is their comfort zone, but songs like opener "Grip Like a Vice" and "Keys to the City" allow everyone to understand that their sound is not so much being rehashed as it is being utterly refined. The overall feel is a bit more gritty (due in part to the instrumentation being mainly live on this release) and does much to capture their incredible live concert experience. Though with the overall similarities in approach, Proof of Youth does fall prey to sounding redundant at times; "Universal Speech" and "I Never Need It Now So Much" should have been b-sides on TLS. But whenever you can have this much fun listening to an album, it is damn near impossible to nay say. Even the down-tempo back porch instrumental "My World" fits into the schema effortlessly. The Go! Team have done it again, making volume two of songs anyone would love to have score their daily lives.
