Massimo
Massimo EP
I've seen Massimo described as folk. Massimo is not folk, by any stretch of the imagination. There are definitely some folk elements, but the music is not to be classified as folk. No, I would describe it as acoustic alternative, circa 1994. Listening to this EP, I couldn't help but think that my dad would like this music. Which is not a bad thing at all. Everybody has their audience and you can't knock anybody because you may not be included in that audience. The EP has a very natural flow to it. The transition from each song to the next is done nicely. Whoever picked the track order did a good job of it. "Anywhere But Here" is a self-explanitory examination of indecision, stagnation, and the need of a change of scenery. A song that I can relate to very well at this point in my life. "Accident" is about a death that could have been. A car wreck that the narrator walked away from, but for some reason, wishes he hadn't. He contends that maybe, just maybe, that the real accident is that he's still alive. The EP starts off in this fashion; with a very jaded view of life and and Michael Massimo's evaluation of his own accomplishments and hopes and dreams. By track #4, "Mountain", a little certainty is found and a stand taken. And with this the music actually starts to get better. "Mountain" and "Daylight" are the last two tracks on the EP and are incidentally the two best. I was always told to go out with a bang, and Massimo does just that at the end of this EP. "Daylight" is a really good song, look for it in our "Steal These MP3's" section. This EP is a commendable release for Massimo. His vocals are a little over the top, but that's to be expected with this genre and is easily overlooked. The style and formula are a bit dated, but like I said, that's not automatically a bad thing. I'm looking forward to seeing what direction Massimo takes with his music in the future.
